Story of the Elephant and the Sparrow
Once upon a time, in a dense green forest, there lived a big elephant. He was huge and strong.
Everytime he walked… THUMP! THUMP!… the ground seemed to shake!
One hot day, the elephant came near a tree where a little sparrow had made her nest.
Inside the nest were her tiny eggs. The sparrow sang happily as she took care of her eggs. “Tweet-tweet! Tweet-tweet!”
The elephant did not notice the sparrow or her nest. He was too restless due to the hot sun.
He stood under the shade of the tree and started pulling its branches. shake, shake, shake!
The sparrow chirped helplessly, Chirp!Chirp!STOP!!…
But the elephant was too irritated to care. He caught hold of the branches which had the sparrow’s nest and pulled it.
“CRASH!”
The nest fell down! “Oh no! My eggs!” cried the little sparrow. The tiny eggs were smashed. The heartbroken sparrow started crying loudly.
The elephant walked away like nothing had happened.
Nearby, the woodpecker saw all this.
A woodpecker who was nearby saw all this. He felt sorry for the sparrow. He was angry at how the elephant did not care or apologise.
The woodpecker approached the sparrow and said, “The elephant is arrogant. He always hurts smaller animals and does not care. We must teach him a lesson.”
The sparrow called her friends – the fly and the frog. They thought of a plan.
They found the elephant looking more irritated and searching for water.
The woodpecker said, “We may be small, but if we work together, we can defeat him! Let’s start!”
First, the fly flew around the elephant’s ears. “Bzzzzzz… bzzzzzz… bzzzzzz!”
The elephant became very annoyed.“Go away!” he shouted.
He tried to chase the fly with his huge trunk “Swish! Swish! Swish!”
But the fly kept buzzing around his ears. “Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!”
The elephant finally closed his eyes.
That was the moment the woodpecker was waiting for!
The woodpecker flew down quickly. He started pecking at the elephant.
“TAP! TAP! PECK! PECK!” The woodpecker pecked at the elephant’s eyes.
The elephant cried out, “OWWW! OWWWW!”
He could not open his eyes. Swishing his trunk, he stumbled through the forest.
The elephants felt irritated and thirsty. He started shouting, “Water! Water!”
Now, the clever frog began to croak loudly near a deep pit.
“Ribbit! Ribbit! CROAK! CROAK!”
The elephant heard the sound and thought, “Ah! There must be water over there!”
He followed the frog’s voice. Closer and closer he went with his eyes closed.
“WHOOSH! CRASH!”
The elephant fell into a deep pit!
“Help! Help!” he cried. But he could not climb out.
He saw the sparrow, the woodpecker, the fly, and the frog. The sparrow said, “I hope you have learnt your lesson. If you hurt smaller animals again, we will stand together and stop you.”
They left him there to be rescued by the other elephants. He would have learnt an important lesson by then.
“Don’t underestimate anyone because of their size. When friends work together, even the biggest problems can be solved!”
Never hurt the weak or small. Kindness matters, and when we stand together, we can overcome even the strongest.
